What to look for in a VFX breakdown

A breakdown makes the construction of a shot visible. It may separate the photographed plate, computer-generated elements, masks, lighting work and final composite. The interesting part is the relationship between those elements, not simply how many layers appear.

Start with the problem the shot needed to solve. Was a world extended, a distracting object removed or an impossible scale created? That intention gives the intermediate stages a purpose and makes the finished result easier to assess.

Look at the details that connect the pieces: perspective, light direction, contact with the ground and the way edges behave in motion. These often explain why a complex image reads as a single scene.

A breakdown is also a selective presentation. It may show one part of a wider production process, so precise contribution notes matter. Clear labels let viewers understand what a particular artist or team added without confusing the complete film with a single discipline.
